The Humane League is an international nonprofit ending the abuse of animals raised for food through institutional and individual change. THL fosters a high-energy culture of teamwork and mission-driven problem solving, and we have earned recognition as Top Charity from Animal Charity Evaluators for all of their rating periods. Over the past few years, The Humane League has positioned itself for growth. We have a current staff size of 70+ dispersed across the country and internationally. We are looking for seasoned organizer, base-builder, and leadership developer to lead a team of Field Organizers to mobilize a growing base of activists.

YOUR OPPORTUNITY

Reporting to the National Director of Organizing, you will work on a team of three Regional Organizing Managers to oversee our distributed national organizing program. You will be responsible for strengthening and growing THL’s grassroots reach, managing regional and local Field Organizers and delivering results for field campaigns across the US. Additionally, you will actively monitor developments in the field, implement field tactics, lead trainings, provide fundraising support, and represent THL at events, conferences, and occasionally to the media.

You are ideal for this position because you have deep organizing knowledge, experience building volunteer capacity, and enthusiasm for engaging volunteers in programs, preferably with experience executing successful grassroots campaigns. You have exceptional speaking, writing, and motivational skills combined with a well-developed command of people management, communications, and outreach best practices.

This is a full-time, remote position with opportunities to travel one to two times per quarter. This is a US-based position. We are only able to consider applicants who possess United States work authorization.

CORE RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Drive efforts to build a strong, engaged base that can be easily mobilized for advocacy and campaign work.
  • Support the National Director of Organizing to develop and execute campaign plans and effective organizing tactics to achieve THL’s animal welfare policy goals.
  • Recruit, train, develop, manage and provide leadership to regional and local Field Organizers.
  • Work closely with the National Director of Organizing and other Field Organizing Managers to shape THL’s strategy for volunteer engagement.
  • Track progress on goals to increase the size and engagement of THL’s network. Establish accountability systems in the field to ensure that campaign goals are met, including the implementation of debriefs and assessments.
  • Work with the National Director of Organizing and Regional Organizing Management team to develop and streamline resources to support field campaign activity and training.
  • Fulfill administrative responsibilities, including tracking income and expenses in line with the budget for your region, overseeing timekeeping for employees, reporting progress on goals, and maintaining records for future organizing efforts.
  • Attend occasional activist events (at least a few per year) to “stay in the game” and deeply understand Field Organizers’ experience and needs.
  • Potential to take on a specialization relevant to your strengths within the Regional Organizing Management team.
  • Travel occasionally for biannual staff retreats, activist events, and regional activist trainings.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Demonstrated ability to build and motivate teams and work effectively in a team environment, both in a management and support role.
  • Ability and enthusiasm to effectively motivate, empower, and engage various target audiences.
  • Excellent listening, interpersonal, communication and problem solving skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to resolve conflicts while maintaining important and effective relationships.
  • Effective time management skills, including prioritizing and managing multiple tasks, and demonstrated ability to work independently within context of a plan.
  • Experience managing volunteers on grassroots campaigns.
  • Deep passion for developing volunteer-centric organizing strategies.
  • Highly proficient in using contemporary office software applications, including word processing, spreadsheets, and the like. Demonstrated ability to learn new software quickly and independently. Experience with any of the following is a plus: EveryAction, Google Drive, Apple Keynote, Slack, Asana, Google sites.
  • Willing to travel 1-2 times per quarter.
  • Previous experience managing employees is preferred, but not required.

Starting salary is $56,000.
