Overview

As controller, you will oversee the financial management of Mercy For Animals’ global operations through localized partnerships with accounting firms and regional teams; and support the organization in financial planning and analysis, financial strategy, financial reporting, and budgeting.

You will take ownership of establishing and improving internal controls to achieve peak operational efficiency, mitigate risk, and ensure organizational compliance with all applicable laws and regulations.

You will do vital work:

  • Prepare budgets and forecasts, analyze financial performance, and monitor cash flow for a budget of up to $16 million (revenue streams include membership and foundation support and individual and corporate giving in six primary countries of operation)
  • Design, implement, and manage systems and procedures to support project planning, budgeting, and tracking to ensure reconciliation and compliance with financial policies
  • Provide hands-on leadership for the finance team in the management and reconciliation of U.S. and Canadian accounts payable and receivable
  • Prepare monthly global financial reports and provide updates on financial status to key leadership
  • Work with the people operations team to process monthly payroll contributions and prepare annual payroll compliance testing for the U.S. and Canada
  • Prepare sales-and-use-tax filing for multiple states and ensure entries are accurate and payments are made in a timely fashion
  • Coordinate system updates for sales-tax rate changes, law changes, nexus updates, and new taxing jurisdictions
  • Manage independent audit of financial statements; preparation of local, federal, and state or provincial tax returns; and compliance with local, federal, and state or provincial reporting obligations in U.S. and Canada
  • Conceive of and implement continual improvement of financial management and reporting systems to achieve peak operational efficiency, including but not limited to cash-flow modeling, evaluation of third-party vendors, negotiating fees, vetting and implementing new software solutions, and ongoing cost-saving analysis
  • Establish internal controls, policies, and procedures to mitigate risk and remain compliant with local, federal, and state or provincial laws and regulations
  • Provide best-practice guidelines with respect to organization-wide processes, including planning annual budgets, maintaining operational efficiencies, and managing the financial structure of international entities
  • Work with the fundraising team to manage revenue channels, including grants and all other donation types
  • Lead monthly meetings with department heads to discuss budget-to-actual comparisons and make adjustments
  • Prepare monthly reports with financial summary to senior leadership and quarterly performance reports for the Finance and Investments Committee and board of directors
  • Perform daily finance-operations tasks that may include processing accounts receivable and accounts payable and gathering information to prepare balance sheets, profit and loss statements, and inventory reports

Through your qualifications, the organization will reach new heights of financial stability and success:

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or business administration
  • CPA or willingness to obtain
  • Five to seven years of experience as a financial controller
  • Work experience in nonprofit finance (preferred)
  • Experience supporting international entities (preferred)
  • Experience with grant management (a plus)
  • Proven track record of budgeting, forecasting, and project planning
  • Advanced knowledge of Excel, Google Sheets, QuickBooks, or other accounting software

Compensation and Benefits

Earn an annual salary of $60,000–$75,000, depending on qualifications. Our paid time-off policy, including 20 vacation days a year, staff-appreciation days, holidays, and sick leave, is as generous as our no- or low-cost health insurance. We also offer a 401(k) plan, not to mention a collaborative and innovative work environment.
